Dog Lives in a Nursing Home After Escaping Shelter

Lovable Mixed Breed Escapes to Nursing Home Repeatedly
A determined rescue dog lives in a nursing home after repeatedly escaping the Antrim County Animal Control in Michigan. Scout the dog scaled the 7-foot chain link fence at the animal control and ran down the road and across the highway to the Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility, a nursing home. Scout let himself in the automatic doors and then settled on the lobby couch.
After being returned to animal control, the black-and-tan mixed breed escaped again and returned to the nursing home couch. Once again, he was returned to the shelter, where he made a daring third escape and landed in the nursing home lobby a third time.
Love at Third Sight
The staff and residents fell in love with the mysterious mutt and adopted him. The dog lives in a nursing home full-time, making rounds to visit all the residents. Scout is now a favorite resident at the facility, wandering from room to room, seeking pats, biscuits, and attention.
Before landing in the nursing home, Scout was picked up as a stray, and his history is unknown. He has some remnants of gunshot wounds and gray on his muzzle, signifying a rough life. Vets estimate he is now between 10 and 12 years of age, making him the perfect senior companion for the seniors in the nursing home.
Resident of the Month
The rescue dog lives in the nursing home full-time now, as he was officially adopted by the staff, who share the responsibilities of caring for him. He is so beloved by residents that they even voted him “Resident of the Month.”
Scout is now the most popular resident of Meadow Brook nursing home, as residents vie for his attention, sometimes bribing him with treats. Scout adds a feeling of home for the residents and brings his warm brown eyes and wagging tail to cheer everyone up.
“A few residents keep dog biscuits in their walkers or in their bedside tables, and he knows where he can go to find them,” staff member Jenni Martinek told NPR.
Scout continues to lift spirits and accept biscuits from all, delivering love and a friendly tail wag whenever he goes.
